While there are great number of resources for learning music online, many tutorials are overly-complicated or difficult to follow. Wading through poorly-made videos, annoying ads and sites which require signing up or paying for content can easily discourage parents and children alike.
That's why I've decided to create a series of free educational videos, specifically designed for kids with autism.
The videos are short (2 minutes) and musical phrases are broken into smaller chunks, with time allowed for listening and then playing back.
Many tutorials tend to write letters or place coloured stickers on the keys however this is not an effective learning strategy as it encourages rote memorisation of numbers without actually learning musical notes or listening to their pitch.
In this tutorial I have included the correct fingering to encourage students to use all their fingers while playing. Using all fingers in this way increases dexterity, allows for easier progression to more complicated songs and improves fine motor co-ordination. Learning to use all fingers while playing is one of the best ways to increase musical confidence and ability.
I'm excited to create more great free resources which make learning music accessible and enjoyable for kids with autism.
